My Sulfur Oil Mix- Updated

Sulfur is a nutritional supplement found in great quantities in the human body. Often sulfur is referred to as the beauty mineral due to it's ability to increase growth in hair, nails and skin. Sulfur also is known for it's ability to improve circulation and decrease inflammation. With hair loss, sulfur can influence the amount of hair you are losing.

I purchased Sublimed Sulfur Powder in 2010 because I read how sulfur can help with hair growth. I haven't received accelerated hair growth from my Sulfur mix, but I NEVER have dandruff, itchy scalp or any scalp issues in general anymore. So I assume it's doing something right. Before I started using my mix, I would apply Sulfur 8 hair grease almost 3 times a week which worked really well.  I stopped using it because I prefer not to apply petrolatum to my scalp.

ETA: I switched up my mix because I now have different oils in my arsenal. Although I have not received accelerated growth in the past, I am hoping this new mix will give me that extra push. As most of you know, I am transitioning. My goal is to transition for 2 years, but if my natural hair can fit into a ponytail before then, I will chop sooner. Hence the use of the sulfur mix. I apply to my scalp 3-4 times weekly and about twice a week, I baggy after applying the mix.

If anyone is interested in my mix, see below for the "ingredients"

 My Current Mix
1/2 Teaspoon of Sublime Sulfur Powder
4 oz of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 oz of Unrefined Coconut Oil
2 Drops of Tea Tree Oil
2 Drops of  Eucalyptus Oil
3 Drops of Rosemary Oil

My Old Mix
1/2 Teaspoon of Sublime Sulfur Powder
4 oz of Cold Pressed Castor Oil
3 oz of Grapeseed Oil
6 drops of Eucalyptus Oil
5 drops of Peppermint Oil

Apply all components in an applicator bottle, let sit for a day.
Then before each use, I shake it up, squeeze some on my fingers, then apply to scalp 2-3 times a week.

Few things to keep in mind when making/using sulfur based products:
  • Always do a patch test to make sure you don't experience any adverse effects or allergic reactions
  • Stop use a week before and a week after a relaxer
  • When making the mix: DO NOT USE TOO MUCH SULFUR. Stick to a tspn or less to 6oz or more of oil.

Sublimed sulfur powder can be purchased on Amazon, at your local pharmacy or the rxzone.us. I have the particular one in the above photo and purchased it from Amazon.(see below).

  1. Hey girl, its me again. I use sulfer 8 too. I think I will try this mixture now since my sulfur 8 is about gone. My daughter and I experience itchy scalp and if I don't put somthing in hers she will get these dry, flaky patches. On the other hand, when I was relaxed, I would base my scalp with sulfur 8 and it worked great for me. My relaxers took better,I didn't experience the burning as much, and my hair wasn't as limp after the relaxer. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but it worked for me.

  2. Heeeey :-)
You should try it out. For a less expensive alternative, you can use just Extra Virgin Olive Oil as your base. Plus, the sulfur powder lasts a long time. I only paid about $5.00 for it and have half left.
Oh you did? That's good to know. I do believe Sulfur 8 has a lower amount of sulfur in it.
    That's good to know!

  3. I am going to try this mix. I tried a mix years ago and put in WAY to much sulfur. I ended up smelling like a lit match.

    2. Will do. I am natural but have a thin/bald spot that came from relaxing. There is the slightest of peach fuzz(wishful thinking) but I'm trying this mix with black Jamaican castor oil to see if I can rectify the situation.

My washday last week was a breeze, and this weekend at 6 weeks, my new growth felt like I was maybe 10 weeks post. Maybe I'm imagining things... I hope not :) hehe

    1. Hello! Sorry for the delayed response. I see that Sulfur is still available on Amazon, just not by the particular vendor I purchased mine from. I would say to start with like 6 oz of olive oil, 5 drops of peppermint oil and a teaspoon of Sulfur powder.
      Hope that helps.

  13. Hi,

Have you considered that your mixture might work better if the sulfur was dissolved in a bit of water and then shaken together with your oils?! By doing this you will be able to release and make use of its water soluble components. When mixed in oil, the only thing released is oil soluble components and since it is a dry powder, it may have few of these kinds of constituents if any. (The sulfur in Sulfur 8 hair pomade might be chemically manipulated in some way unknown to laypersons that increases its bio-availability in petrolatum -- as laypersons / non chemists we should not assume that commercial products are very simple formulas that can be easily mimicked at home.)

Another type of sulfur you might want to try is MSM: it is a white crystalline powder and also comes in liquid and cream forms. It is basically odorless and has very little taste. You can ingest it or applied it topically to hair and skin. I mix the powder or liquid in with some of my hair products and it leaves my hair silky soft shiny and with a loosened curl and little to no frizz. I do not have to use heavy pomades, oils, butters, or creams, nor lots of sticky glycerin-based products when I mix in the MSM with my moisturizing sprays. My hair is 3B/3C, very dry and brittle and tight from nutritional deficiencies (I am diabetic.)
