My Top 3 Transitioning to Natural Tips

Relaxed to Natural

Hey Everyone!

I'm trying to do a “tips” post once a week. I don’t want to drown you all in posts all about me, me, me, me. haha

For this week, because it’s fresh on my mind, I will do one on transitioning.

Keep in mind, this is also great for relaxer stretchers.

1.) Detangle BEFORE washing your hair- Before running water touches your hair, it should be tangle free. If not, matting and excessive tangles will occur.
My suggestion is to:

  • section your hair in about 6-8 sections
  • Lightly dampen each section with water, your detangler, conditioner, whatever works best for you
  • Finger detangle
  • Comb with a wide tooth comb
  • Then either twist or braid that section up and proceed to washing.

2.)    Wash hair in Sections- This has been an absolute life-saver for me! Wash day was never stressful because detangling wasn’t much of an issue. Now the key was to actually ponytail off the sections and keep them in while washing. I did not remove each ponytail holder because it wasn’t necessary. My hair was already detangled prior to putting them in and I also deep conditioned prior to shampooing. I was also able to effectively shampoo my hair even though it was sectioned off.

3.)    Have at least 3 go-to Hair styles- When you look good, you feel good. Having a few bad hair days is expected when transitioning, but it should NOT be the norm. This is why it’s best to perfect a few hairstyles. This is especially important for those transitioning with their real hair and not with the assistance of wigs, weaves and extensions.
My suggestion is to have at least one style for:

  • During the week
  • Weekends
  • Special events

My sister, who is currently transitioning, has 2 styles for now:
A bun with a braid or wavy bangs in front
Kinky twists(with added hair).

The bun is perfect for during the week because it doesn’t require much maintenance.  Adding something to the front of your hair, doesn’t make it seem so boring and you aren’t causing too much tension to your edges. You should also change the positioning of the buns for your hair health and for fun. :-)

Kinky twists are perfect for when you want to give your hair a break for an extended period of time while rocking a “natural look” and looking cute!

You all know that my go to styles were:
Twists with my own hair
High buns
Twist and Curls

Hope this helps!!

I have some more transitioning tips in the near future, so stay tuned!

  2. I preach 30 second, 3 minute, and 30 minute styles like its the gospel. Every girl, regardless of hair status should have one of each in her repertoire! There's nothing like the calm in knowing that you're prepared for a hair emergency!

    Great tips!
